Condemn the killing of prominent woman human rights defender (WHRD) Shaimaa El Shabbagh
Join us in condemning the killing of prominent woman human rights defender (WHRD) Shaimaa El Shabbagh. Shaimaa was shot to death in downtown Cairo while participating in a peaceful protest. Video footage and photographs of her last moments, taken by journalists and activists, have sparked widespread outrage in Egypt and beyond.
Shaimaa was taking part in a peaceful march to Tahrir square on 24 January along with between 20 to 40 members of the Popular Socialist Alliance Party. They were marching peacefully holding flowers and chanting “bread – freedom – social justice” to pay tribute to the hundreds who died during the 2011 upraising.

Thai defenders at risk of violence and eviction by local law enforcement and paramilitary
According to Frontline Defenders International, community members of the Khlong Sai Pattana in Chaiburi Distrit have been intimidated to leave their homes by a group of eight men, including two local policemen in uniform, one military office in uniform, two members of the local mafia group and three unidentified men. This intimidation is part of an ongoing campaign of harassment and violence since 2009, including the deaths of women human rights defenders Ms Montha Chukaew and Ms Pranee Boonrat who were shot and killed in 2012.
